He operated an organic farm in Pennsylvania for six years, and has done research into the German success in using green roofs to treat urban runoff, which led him to form an alliance with Optigrüh International AG. He is a member of the Technical Advisory Committees of the Center for Green Roof Research at Pennsylvania State University and Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Coalition, Toronto, Canada, and of the ASTM Subcommittee on Sustainability-Buildings.
